HELD ON FOR DRAW

Canterbury B At Hutt "The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON. Dec. 30. Canterbury B was forced to follow on in its cricket match against Hutt Valley at the Hutt Recreation Ground today, but the visitors held out for a draw. With the fall of the fourth wicket at 38, West and Gallop came together, and they provided a good finish to the match by adding 6$ runs in 40 minutes. Gallop was on 44, and hit one six and eight fours. Heavy early morning rain softened the wicket and delayed- the resumption of play until 1.30 p.m. Carrying on from its overnight score of 56 for five. Canterbury was all out for 160 in reply to Hutt Valley’s 345, and in the remaining 105 minutes of play Canterbury scored 100 for four. Much interest centred in the batting of the Essex professional, M. J. Bear, who is official coach to the Canterbury association. IA slim man and a left-hander, Bear possibly saved Canterbury from outright loss with a determined innings of 40 not out. Bear lacks the polish in batting associated with many other English professionals who have visited New Zealand, but he keeps his head down, has an excellent smothering defence, and hits a ball hard off the back fbot. On the slow wicket he could not play attacking shots by driving, and wisely did not attempt them. Bear batted 135 minutes and hit one six and four fours. J. E. England, who was the wicket-keeper in the New Zealand Colts’ team in Australia last season, gave Bear valuable assistance in making 21. The pacy Hutt Valley bowlers were the most successful. B. D. Morrison taking five for 42 from 19 overs, and R. K. P. Jones got three for 40.

In the visitors’ second innings, the Hutt Valley captain, E. S. Manderson, opened with and maintained a spin attack until near the close of the game. G. T. McConnell was the most successful, his off-spinners earning him three wickets. | Scores:— HUTT VALLEY First Innings .. .. ..345 CANTERBURY B First Innings I. R. Hartland, c and b Jones .. 36 J.
