Chathams Flying-Boat Service Reopened

(Aiew Zealand Press Association)

CHATHAM ISLANDS, Dec. 27. The flying-bott base reopened today when two Sunderland ] aircraft of the R.N.Z.A.F. brought home school children and other passengers who had been waiting on the mainland for transport. The planes left with visitors and officials who had completed service in the islands.

The flying - boats, normally based at Hobsonville, left from Evans Bay, Wellington, which is now the base for the Chathams air service. The turn-round of the two flights was rapid. Many persons who arrived to watch the planes picnicked in the native bush near the base. The. annual Chathams race meeting was postponed one day because of the occasion. The service was suspended several months ago until improvements were carried out in the Te Whanga Lagoon by Ministry of Works and Civil Aviation Administration representatives with the co-operation of local residents.
