Cup Candidates Meet At Ellerslie Today

“The Press" Special Service

AUCKLAND, December 27. Horses spared from racing on Monday might be the best prospects in the Summer Cup, the first leg of the T.A.B. double at Ellerslie tomorrow. One is the local mare Carolyn Anne, which is well placed with 7-0 and No. 10 at the start.

Having won at both his last two attempts and secured a second and a fourth at his two previous starts, Gold Raider is the form candidate for the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the Electric Handicap, six furlongs.. The outcome of Ilumquh’s meeting with Lawful, Arid and two other Auckland Cup candidates. Red Eagle and Picaroon, at weight-for-age in the Clifford Plate is being awaited eagerly. Whichever wins will boom in favour for the big two-mile race on Monday. ' Ilumquh’s appearance will attract considerable attention, because since the declaration of the cup weights he has been a popular fancy for the event. He has had a' fair absence from racing but seems fit.

It is one of the conditions of the summer programme that except for unusual circumstances, the stake for the Clifford Plate will be reduced by half if the winning gallop is more than four seconds slower than that of the Summer Cup. Last year it was the Clifford Plate that was run the quicker. Stylish Officer going 2min 3 2-ssec as against Old Salt’s 2min 4sec. It will be disappointing if the two gallops do not compare fairly similarly tomorrow.
