SOVIET SHIP MISSING?

Early Departure From Suva

(N.Z. Press Association— Copyright) SUVA, December 27.

Royal New Zealand Air Force spokesmen at Suva tonight refused to confirm or deny a report that the Soviet ship Shokalsky had disappeared on Christmas Eve, one day after leaving Suva. The ship’s departure had been advanced about 24 hours without public explanation. Much activity among R.N.Z.A.F. Sunderland flying boats has produced strong rumours of a widespread search for the Shokalsky. [However, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal M. F. Calder, said in Wellington last night that no request had been received by the R.N.Z.A.F. from Russian sources for assistance in finding the Shokalsky.] Another unconfirmed but persistent report mentions the appearance of an unidentified submarine or submarines near Tarawa in the Gilbert Islands, about 1000 miles north of Fiji. Tass reported from Moscow last week that the Shokalsky had launched the first Soviet meteorological rocket in the tropical atmospheric belt before calling at Suva.

The Shokalsky arrived at Suva on December 20 and the Russian sailors and scientists on board caused some surprise by welcoming visitors to the ship. Adults and children were treated with marked cordiality.
