DISPLAYS AT MUSEUM
Guide-Book, Slides, Coins
A display featuring Miss Rose Reynolds’ guide-book to the exhibits in the Canterbury colonists section in the Canterbury Museum has been set up in a display case in the entrance corridor to the galleries. There is only a limited use of descriptive labels in this section of the must eum, as otherwise the illusion of reality in the period settings might be jeopardised. To meet the increasing demand for colour slides of museum exhibits, a display of the enlarged set now available' has been set up in the foyer.
A selection of coins to replace the Ernest Rutherford display has been prepared by the honorary numismatist, Mr L. J. Dale. In addition to important New Zealand coins and medals, there is a group of coins from the Roman occupation of Britain, and the Imperial period in Italy, and a selection of British coins from Elizabeth I to George VI. A deep-freeze unit has been installed to enable perishable specimens to be preserved while awaiting attention from the prepara tor. Recent additions to the museum collections include: Carved Maori feather box, Rapaki (presented by Mrs K. Wilkie); Maori stone adze, Panmure, (Mr H. R. Miller); casts of Maori pendant from mouth of Clutha river, and harpoon point from Taiaroa (Otago Museum); books on Maori tattooing and art (Mrs H. Rattray); Sterling bicycle, 1897 (lent by Rangiora Early Records Society); three cups and saucers, Worcester porcelain (deposited by Commander D. G. N. Bush); blade of Maori chief's ceremonial greenstone adze, pierced for lashing to haft (purchased); ornamented set of lime pestles, Trobriand Island (presented by Mr H. L. Wilson).
