McMURDO VISIT BY SCHOOLBOY
U.S. Naval Attache’s Son (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 13. George Knowles, aged 17, son of the United States Naval Attache in New Zealand (Commander L. C. Knowles; will have an experience this Christmas that will fall to no other boy in New Zealand: he will visit the Antarctic. Tomorrow Knowles, a Hutt Valley High School pupil, will leave Wellington for Christchurch to join the cargo vessel Towle, which will rendezvous with the icebreaker Glacier, The latter will break through the ice into McMurdo Sound, and Knowles will then transfer from the steamer to a helicopter. He will spend Christmas at McMurdo. Commander Knowles was twice in the Antarctic with Admiral Byrd, and he has been there on three occasions since assuming his present post in New Zealand.
