WOMEN’S CLUB PARTY
Family Heirlooms Displayed
Family heirlooms and treasures in the form of brooches, fobs and earrings, were displayed at the Christmas party of the Canterbury Women’s Club, in Christchurch last evening.
Pieces of jewellery shown included a 2s piece dating from the time of George 111 and fashioned to make a brooch: a heavy silver locket carrying photographs of couples from four generations; a very old fob perfume bottle swinging from a fine silver chain winch was worn on the little finger. Each piece had a story behind it like the brooch inscribed with the name Alice. This was given to each girl of that name in the family and was worn by every girl on her wedding day.
There was a brooch that had been made from a gold nugget which was presented to a pioneer couple, more than 100 years ago by the captain of the ship that brought them to New Zealand. Another unusual piece was a pendant of a square-cut crystal surrounded by a beaded silver frame and inset with a spray of flowers in hand-wrought silver. Members of the drama and singing circles combined to put on a Christmas play entitled. “Star of Christmas.” Each scene was introduced with a carol and at the end of the play the audience joined in with carol singing. The olay was produced by Mrs C. Hunter with Mrs A. Ledsham as musical director The accompanist was Mrs H L. Wilson.
Sorays and Christmas table motifs were presented to the president (Mrs C Shaw). Mrs Ledsham. Mrs Hunter, Mrs Wilson and the make-up artist (Mrs R till). The Christmas cake was cut by Miss V. Billens who has been a member of the club for the last 25 years. As they came into the reception room, members left gifts by a gaily decorated Christmas tree. These will be delivered to elderly folk in the city.
