Earl Buchholz, the explosive United States Davis Cup tennis player, will turn professional and appear in New Zealand shortly in the Beecham 1961 world professional tennis series.
This was announced by Mr I. Waterhouse, an executive of the sponsoring firm, in Wellington last night. Mr Waterhouse said that L. Hoad, P. Gonzales and A. Gimeno were definitely coming on the New Zealand tour with Buchholz, K. Rosewall also would tour and one other player would be named at a later date.
“The other player to be named will be a big surprise, a very big surprise,” Mr Waterhouse added. “Kramer definitely wants New Zealand in the world series every year, regardless of the financial return, but he expects some real co-operation from the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association to make this possible.” The 1961 world series will be played over 75 matches and- for 135,000 dollars prize money. The professionals will be playing for 1500 dollars in each match in New Zealand. “All I can say Is that it will be the best troupe to come to New Zealand to date and don’t forget there will be a big surprise in the naming of the final player," said Mr Waterhouse.
