WATER SAFETY RULES
Warning Given Holiday-Makers
Every year for the last few years the number of drownings in New Zealand has topped the 100 mark, most occurring in the holiday mouths. With an eye to the coming holidays, the Health Department has issued a warning against carelessness in the water. “Choose a safe place to- swim, and don’t go in alone or swim too far,” the department’s statement says. "Observe instructions on notice-boards or given by authorised people. Before diving, check that the depth of water is sufficient and see that there are no hidden snags. “When boating, don’t overload or tool around in open boats. Don’t go too far from the shore, whether of lake or sea. Each person should wear a life-jacket. Remember that winds can rise quickly, particularly on lakes. “Above all, be alert all the time for danger to children.”
