RADIOACTIVE WASTES
No Marine Dumping By France
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, Dec. 15
The French Atomic Energy Commission has announced in Paris it will give up the idea of dumping between 10 and 20 drums of radioactive waste In the sea off south-east France. No further plans will be made without consulting all the relevant scientific authorities. “The Times” Paris correspondent recalls that when the commission first announced its plans two months ago it caused widespread protests. Scientists, particularly oceanographers, protested that a chance bursting of a drum would infect the surrounding water and destroy its marine life. The local tourist trade also protested that the presence of the waste would frighten away tourists. In the face of this the commission postponed its plans, which now have been abandoned.
