MOTORISTS WARNED
Faulty Tyres On Cars
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 15.
“Bald” tyres will be one of the potential dangers on the roads in the coming holidays. Through blow-outs, sliding and inefficient stopping, worn tyres are the direct and indirect cause of many accidents, said the Transport Department’s superintendent (Mr J. C. Edwards).
In advising motorists not to risk worn tyres, Mr Edwards said that in 9566 vehicles in recent road checks, 591 had been found to have tyres considered to be unsafe.
Another disturbing disclosure had been the big number of vehicles on which the warrant of fitness had expired. Over 206 tickets and another 200 warnings have been issued for this offence. Other dangerous defects found have been: foot brakes (88), hand brakes (140), and steering (63). Many motorists are also driving without current licences, it has been found. Ninety cases were reported in the first fortnight of checks.
Mr Edwards warned that drivers faced, prosecution for this offence. He advised all motorists to check their licences to see that they would be current for the holiday period. A total of 274 traffic offence notices and 1120 warnings had been issued as a result of road checks for the fortnight up to December 3.
