Rental Services Requested At Licensing Hearing

An increasing demand from persons in Sockburn for rental car services was the reason for his application for an authority to operate two rental cars from Sockburn, said Mr R. T. Lucas, at a hearing before the No. 9 Transport Licensing Authority (Mr J. S. Haywood) yesterday. Three objections lyere entered against the application. Lucas said there was a large demand for rental cars from persons at the Royal New Zealand Air Force station at Wigram. Also, a rental car service would heln his garage trade in Springs road. With ftirther housing subdivisions in the district and the infrequent bus services he expected a demand for rental cars which would not be satisfied by the firms who gave a rental car service at present. The hearing was adjourned until the next public sitting to enable further witnesses to be called.

In recent years very little stock was walked out of Banks Peninsula. it was now mainly taken to Christchurch by truck, said Mr J. B. Hay, a Pigeon Bay farmer, in support of an application by Griffin Brothers (Mr B. A. Barrer) to amend their licences to allow general goods and livestock and hay to be carried. Objecting on behalf of the Banks Peninsula branch of the Road Transport Alliance Mr H. W. Hunter contended that the firms in the district were giving a satisfactory service and there was no need for the application. The authority reserved decision.

Five carriers situated at Belfast opposed an application by Maurice Gordon Bell (Mr N. G. Hattaway)

for an additional vehicle authority. Bell said that his business was increasing and one particular contract he had gained meant another truck was needed. Mr H. W. Hunter, for the objectors, said that some of the carriers in Belfast could not face up to competition from another vehicle and the application was premature. The application was granted subject to a condition that only timber, joinery and concrete posts were carried. Other applications granted by the authority were:— Clement Percy Moore (Mr J. A. Bretherton). an additional vehicle authority. A formal objection was made by the Christchurch and Suburban Carriers' Association (Mr J. J. B. Connor). Gorden Frederick Holmes (Mr Bretherton), an additional vehicle authority.

Ellesmere Transport Ltd. <Mr W. G. P. Cuningham). an additional vehicle authority and an amendment to an existing licence to allow general goods to be carried.

Baylis Brothers (Leeston) Ltd. (Mr Cuningham), an amendment to a licence for the carrying of scoria, shingle and sand to allow •general goods to be carried Transfer of a continuous goods service licence from John Pearcy to William John Pearcy. Transfer of a continuous goods service licence from Ernest James Jennings to Reeve Clark Idiens. as trustee for a company to be formed.
