Special Diet “In moving the accounts for payment, I would say that although the accounts for the WaiaU hostel are high they would not have been so high if tomatoes at 5s 6d per lb had not been bought,” said Mr H. E. Connor at yesterday’s meeting of the North Canterbury Nassella Tussock Board. “In the last few days I’ve been grubbing nassella and on a hot day there is nothing more satisfying in the lunch tin than a tomato sandwich,” said the chairman (Mr T. G. Maxwell. Choristers’ Outing Under the care of the Master of Choristers (Mr C. Foster Browne) members of the Christchurch Cathedral choir spent yesterday afternoon as guests of the American Antarctic advance headquarters at. Harewood. On their arrival at 2.30 p.m. the boys were shown two coloured films “Deepfreeze ’6O” and “The Seven • Cities of Antarctica.” Later Rear-Admiral D. M. Tyree spoke to the boys, as did last year’s leader at Scott base (Lieutenant-Commander J. Lennox King). Double-Edged When the North Canterbury Nassella Tussock Board at its meeting yesterday discussed a particular problem with many ramifications and implications, a resolution was moved that the whole matter be re-examined and the facts placed before the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Gillespie). “Make sure the letter begins with the board’s expression of congratulations on his appointment,” was a member’s comment. Crayfish Scarce Crayfish were scarce in Christchurch fish shops yesterday, although the price was still 4s per lb. There was a moderate supply of sole, flounder, ling, red cod and groper. If the weather remains fine a better supply is expected today. Kingfish fillets sold for 2s 6d to 2s 9d per lb, tarakihi fillets from 2s 6d to 3s per lb and boneless groper was available at 4s to 4s 6d per lb. Tomato Prices Rise Tomato prices increased to 3s 8d per lb in the Christchurch produce markets yesterday. The first of the Nelson pumpkins arrived and sold for Is 3d per lb. The apple season is drawing to a close and apricots from Central Otago are expected shortly. Stone fruit is in good supply, and a shipment of island water melons which arrived in the Tarawera, should be on sale today. Gifts From Children Instead of receiving gifts from a Christmas tree, pupils of the infant department at Wairakei School took gifts for the tree to the school. Initiated by the infant mistress, Mrs M. Camie, and the staff, this idea of giving instead of receiving met with such a response from the children that two clothes baskets full of presents will be given for the Christchurch Cathedral Christmas tree Street Lighting The National Roads Board asked at its meeting yesterday that estimates of the cost of all street lighting in municipalities and counties and on State highways be prepared for its next meeting. After studying this report the board will decide its policy on acceptance of street lighting as subsidised works.— (P.A.) Thefts Of Fowls A Napier poultry farmer, Mr C. J. Eagle, of Riverbend road, who has lost between 600 and 800 cockerels during the last week, believes that a chicken thief is operating on a large scale in the Napier district. Mr Eagle said yesterday that there was a shortage of poultry this year, and it was evident that the thief was operating on a large scale and with a good* market. Mr Eagle lost most of his cockerels, valued at 10s each, while he and his wife were spending an evening at the pictures. Several weeks ago, a Hastings poultry farmer lost about 500 young birds.—(P.A.)
