LIBERALS WIN BY-ELECTION
Majority Much Reduced
(Rec. 9 p.m.) MELBOURNE, December 14
The reported loss of popularity of the Liberal Federal Government, following its recent restrictive economic measures, was confirmed today when the Victorian seat of Higinbotham was declared to have been won in a by-election by the Liberals w’ith a muoh reduced majority.
The result of the election on December 10 had been in doubt pending the counting of the voters’ second preferences. The Australian Labour Party candidate led strongly on first preferences but was overhauled and beaten by 603 votes on second preference votes of the Democratic Labour Party, a breakaway group from the Labour Party. Political commentators have described the Liberal Party’s loss of votes as a reflection of the unpopularity of the economic measures, particularly the credit restrictions and 10 per cent, increase in motor car sales tax.
