Industry At Opawa

Sir, —In spite of a petition to the City Council signed by over 100 householders of Hillsborough and presented by the DeputyMayor (Cr. Smith) supported by a deputation over 60 strong, the City Council is said to be agreeing to permit an industry classified as noxious in an established residential area. Would it be possible to ask the Town Clerk why the council is giving this permission for the processing of gypsum in the Hillsborough area of Opawa in face of the overwhelming objection of local residents?—Yours, etc., L NORTON. December 4. 1960. (The acting Town Clerk (Mr C. S. Bowie) replies: “The area in which the proposed factory is to be located is zoned as Industrial C. The process to be carried out in this factory was recently classified as a chemical works under the Chemical Works Order, 1960, which amended the fourth schedule of the Health Act. Under the provisions of the Health Act, the approval of both the Medical Officer of Health and the City Council to operate such a process is required. After a full investigation of the proposed manufacturing process, this approval has been given.”]
