RIVER PLATE REUNION

Veterans Meet In Auckland (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 11. Nearly 150 veterans of one of the Second World War's most notable naval engagements bowed their heads in prayer in Auckland today, honouring their companions killed in the battle and remembering the grimness of the war that brought them together. They were members of the River Plate Veterans’ Association attending the commemoration service of the twenty-first anniversary of the battle between the cruisers Exeter, Ajax and Achilles and the German pocketbattleship Graf Spee off the mouth of the River Plate on December 13, 1939. The Rev. G. T. Robson. 0.8. E., M.C., gave the address. Formerly senior chaplain to the Royal New Zealand Navy he is the only honorary member of the River Plate veteran’s association. More than 200 veterans attended the annual reunion supper on Saturday evening. Among them was the oldest member. Chief E.R.A. Charles Bond, aged 72. who lives in Stratford. He has not . missed a reunion since the. association was formed 15 years ago.
