University To Make Study (From a Reuter Correspondent) BERKELEY (California). The University of California is to conduct a 500,000-dollar fiveyear study of anti-Semitism in the United States. Its aim is “to produce an accurate and comprehensive picture of anti-Semitism in America, to assess its current status and extent, to mark its sources and to identify factors which encourage and sustain it.” Making this announcement recently, the chancellor, Dr. G. T. Seaborg, and Mr H. E. Schultz, national chairman of the AntiDefamation League of B’nai B’rith, in New York, said the study would begin early next year. “The University of California intends to bear the major burden of the research, but we expect to enlist the collaboration of scholars from other universities,” Dr. Seaborg said. “This is essential because of the size and extent of the programme.” The study will assess the present situation and examine the history of anti-Semitism. Research workers will examine ways in which anti-Semitic attitudes develop and the impact of Christian religious education on such attitudes. They hope to learn how, and when, anti-Semitic attitudes result in anti-Semitic acts and in what ways the situation in the’ United States differs from that in other countries.

“While there has been a great deal of research in the general field of inter-group and race relations, specific researches into anti-Semitism have not kept pace,” Mr Schultz explained. Mr Schultz said that the AntiDefamation League would seek financial support for the project from individuals and educational foundations. Dr. C. Glock, director of the university’s survey research centre, will co-ordinate the programme.
