Bargoed Favoured At Weight-For-Age
AUCKLAND. December 9. The meeting at weight-for-age of a most talented company in the Thames Valley Stakes should provide a memorable race at the Te Aroha Jockey Club’s summer meeting tomorrow. Bargoed or the other three-year-old contest- • ant, Blue Lodge, might win.
Over a mile at this time of the year the standard scale provides for the three-year-old colts and geldings to carry 8-2. Of the other 13 horses in today’s big event 10 have 9-2. one is weighted with 9-0 and two have 8-11
One of the two with 8-11 is the five-year-old mare Messalina, which is being given a great chance.
Golden Candidate, which won the race last season when It was run in the autumn. Red Eagle, Marwon. Lawful and Lampada are other notble candidates.
The superiority of Blue Lodge over his three-year-old opponents has so far been conclusive, but he has not raced since November 5 when he won the New Zealand Derby. Bargoed has had pretty stiff and regular competition and that might have him a trifle the better prepared.
The first leg of the double will be the W S. Goosman Handicap. It will be disappointing if Climbing does not go well. He is a five-year-old which • seems to be improving to very good form.
Shamrock Queen is right back to her best and ready to make a bold bid in the second leg, the Flying Handicap. Her most notable opponents appear to be Fountainhead. Gold Raider, Beech Park and Sir David.
