NEW MEMORIAL BURSARIES
St. Andrew's College
Two new memotial bursaries were presented for the first time at the annual prize-giving ceremony of St Andrew's College yesterday afternoon. They are the Duncan Rutherford memorial busary and the “Paddy” Hilson memorial bursary.
Duncan Rutherford gave £5OOO to the college in 1917, enabling the purchase of “Strowan.” the site on which the college stands. Members of his fapiily—Mr and Mrs H. M. Dampier-Crossley, Mrs J. W. Fraser, Mrs P. Morse, and Mr D. L. Rutherford, of “Leslie Hills” —have each given £5OO to establish a fund from which the bursary is giveti. “Paddy” Hilson was a former pupil of the college and a member of the Royal New Zealand Air Force. The bursary was given by friends and relatives. The choice of the boys to whom the bursaries are to be awarded is left to the rector of the college. They are to be awarded on the grounds of character, ability and standing in the school, taken in relation to the boys’ financial circumstances. The Duncan Rutherford bursary is to enable a boy to take a course in the lower sixth form and the “Paddy” Hilson bursary for a boy in the upper sixth form.
