TEACHERS PAID
Integrated Schools NEW ORLEANS, Dec. 9. An unidentified New Orleans citizen had made money available to pay teachers’ salaries for November at two integrated public schools, the Schools Superintendent, Mr James F. Redmond, said last night. Mr Redmond would not identify the donor, or give the amount involved. Cheques to cover the salaries of staff at the William Frantz and McDonogh schools, both integrated by Federal Court order on November 14, were distributed at the schools. Both schools have been the scene of boycotts and demonstration by those objecting to classes for both white children and negroes. The Louisiana State Legislature recently paid the salaries of staff at other New Orleans schools, but refused to pay the salaries of teachers and others at the two integrated schools. Mr Redmond said yesterday’s pay was the first their staff at Frantz and McDonogh had received since October 28. “I am exceedingly proud of the professional attitude and sturdy hearts of each of the members of the staffs of those two schools.” he said
The payments went to principals, teachers, clerks, custodians and cafeteria workers of the two schools.
Frustrated hecklers turned to telephone threats, vandalism and economic reprisals to keep attendance down to 15 at Frantz yesterday.
There were no hecklers round the school but only 14 white children appeared to attend classes with Ruby Nell Bridges, the lone negro girl going to the school. It was five fewer than yesterday, and a drop of nine in two days. ■During the night, rocks were thrown through windows of house of white families whose children are attending Frantz, and their telephones rang incessantly. When they answered, they heard mumbled threats and obscenities.
