TRAWLING BY BIG JAPANESE SHIPS
Activity Concerns N.Z. Fishing Industry (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 7. The fishing industry was very concerned with continued Japanese activities which had been intensified off both coasts of the North Island, said Mr F. G, Baskett, chairman of Sanford, Ltd., fish merchants and exporters, at the company’s annual meeting in Auckland today.
"Our own fishing vessels are highly efficient and suitable for the New Zealand trade but we cannot finance the type of large ships the Japanese are using,” he said.
Some fishing grounds were showing signs of depletion, and the Government must do its utmost to preserve New Zealand fishing waters for New Zealand industry, said Mr Baskett. .
