THROWING DURING M.C.C. TOUR
Bowlers Given Benefit Of Doubt
(N.Z Pres,< Assoetntton—Co-pywqht) ADELAIDE, December 8,
The former test umpire, M. Mclnnes. of South Australia, last night admitted that he gave the benefit of the doubt to one or more bowlers under Throwing Law 26 during the M.C.C. tour of Australia in 1958-59.
Mclnnes, being questioned on a national television programme, appeared with the former-inter-nationals, W. O’Reilly, J. Fingleton. and R. Lindwall.
The members of the panel were asked whether they believed any bowler who played in the 1958-59 series or was a prospective candidate for next year’s touring team did, in fact, throw the ball. Fingleton said J. Burke, now retired, had “always thrown" and I. Meckiff was so doubtful in the second test in the 1958-59 series that he should have been called.
O’Reilly said Meckiff had been suspect several times, but Lindwall defended Meckiff. Mclnnes then said: “I think Meckiff was quite clear and I would not add any other name except T. Lock, who deliberately threw one at Brisbane and I, as umpire, missed it."
