GREATEST USE OF APTITUDES
Dr. Llewellyn’s Advice To Boys
The future of New Zealand depended on each person making the greatest use of his aptitudes, said the Vice Chancellor of the University of Canterbury (Dr. F. J. Llewellyn) in an address to prize-winners of Christchurch Boys’ High School at the school’s prize-giving ceremony yesterday. Those of you who are interested in science remember that a scientist cannot keep to himself —he has to be a member of the community. Society has a great need for trained minds in every facet of community life.” he said. The great scientific and technological advance of the last few years did not mean that the only opportunities for advancement were in scientific fields. As science progressed so there was a demand for people to interpret those advances. The scientist was dependent on othdr persons in the community.
Dr. Llewellyn said that by the time he was in the sixth form, a pupil should know, or be con. sidering, the job he wanted. Because of the industrial growth of New Zealand it was certain the number of vacant jobs would continue to exceed the number of applicants. “Do not merely take whatever job was offered. Think of the future and whether you will use your abilities best in that job,” he said.
