SHIP LIFE-SAVING EQUIPMENT
New Regulations Gazetted (New Zealand Preu Association) WELLINGTON. December «. After the loss of the coastal vessel Holmglcn off Timaru last year, the Court of Inquiry into her loss m»de certain recommendations about the carrying of life-saving equipment by vessels trading on the coast. Benefiting from th* experience of the United Kingdom and other overseas countries, the Marine Department ha* now drawn up regulations to cover cargo vessels in the New Zealand home trade. These were garetted tonight. The regulations require inflatable liferafts to ba carried on certain home-trade ship* and fishing busts. In some eases the inflatable liferafts are to be carried in addition to lifeboats, and in others they ar* to be carried instead of lifeboat*. In some esses inflatable liferafts must be carried where at present there is no requirement for th* carriage of a lifeboat. In th* case of vessels more than Ififift In length * lifeboat must be carried in addition to inflatable liferafts, but for smaller vesells It la necessary that only a dinghy or workboat should be carried In addition to the liferaft*.
