PRIZE-GIVING CEREMONIES

Linwood High. School

Expectations for increased roll numbers and the problems of over-taxed accommodation were mentioned by the headmaster of the Linwood High School (Mr P. A. Hickling) in his annual report presented at the school’s prize-giving ceremony in the Civic Theatre yesterday morning:— ' Our roll at the beginning of the year was 846. With this number our accommodation has been severely taxed, as the two new class rooms, approved in 1959, are only now being built,” he says. ‘‘A year ago I expressed the opinion that our 1959 roll of 857 was likely to be our maximum. Since then a change in Government policy foreshadows greatly increased numbers for schools like ours. Next year we expect to have over 900, and eventually our numbers could grow to 1000 or more. This would mean a probable intake of about 350 third formers,” said Mr Hickling. Prizes were presented as follows: Class Frizes Forms.—3 H: Margaret A. Holden 1. Julie F. Girls’ High School

Tributes were paid to Miss R. F. C. Tyndall, retiring principal of the Christchurch Girls’ High School, when the school prizegiving ceremony was held in the Civic Theatre last night. Professor R. T. Sussex, chairman of the Board of Governors, said that she had fulfilled her functions to the entire satisfaction of the board. The guest speaker, Dr. K. J. Sheen, of the Education Department, passed on the personal good wishes of the Assistant Director of Education, Mr F. R. G. Aitken. Plans for the use of the section at 30 Armagh street, next to the school, where an old house was recently * demolished, were in course of preparation. Miss Tyndall said in her annual report. Progress towards the new assembly hall had been “frustratingly slow,” largely because of indecision over the site.

The end-of-the year roll was 671, compared with 708 on March 1, she reported. A year of * ‘comparative” stability in the staff was ending unfortunately with the prospect of 11 departures. Mrs Sheen presented the prizes. The prize list was:— Class Prizes
