MOTOR-CYCLIST FINED £15
Passed Overtaking Cars At 80 m.p.h. (From Our Own Reporter) WESTPORT, December 7. “To use a racing parlance, this person was "three out’ as he passed a motorist who. in turn, was passing another car on the Fairdown straight, at about 80 miles an hour.” said Traffic Officer L. D. Anderson, when giving evidence in the Magistrate’s Court at Westport this morning, against Reginald J. Griffen, of Christchurch, who was charged with speeding on his motor-cycle on that road on October 23. Griffen was fined £l5 by Mr G. A. Nicholls, S.M., and his licence was cancelled for one year. The traffic officer described his offence as one of the worst cases of speeding he had seen. He’said that at 2.30 p.m. on the date stated, he stopped his car when on patrol to talk to two police constables. He heard the roar of a motor-cycle and saw it swing round a bend. He estimated that it was travelling at about 70 miles an hour at that stage. Griffen was carrying a pillion passenger, and neither wore crash helmpts. The defendant continued on, and his speed had been checked at 80 miles an hour. At this speed he overtook several vehicles, including one which was in the act of overtaking another car.
