GAINS BY NATIONAL CONFIRMED
Majorities In Gisborne, Rotorua Increased
The election to Parliament of Mr H. R. Lapwood (National) in Rotorua and Mrs E. T. Tombleson (National) in Gisborne was confirmed by final figures announced yesterday, both defeating sitting Labour members. The state of parties remains: National 46, Labour 34.
Mr Lapwood increased his election-night majority of 271 over the Minister of Customs (Mr Boord) to 358, and Mrs Tombleson increased her lead of 44 over the Chairman of Committees (Mr R. A. Keeling) to 291.
In Manukau, Mr F. L. A. Gotz, the sitting National member, leads the Labour candidate, Mr C. D. Stamp, by six votes on the preliminary count. The final result is expected tomorrow.
With final returns from 57 electorates now announced, the National Party has captured seven seats from Labour —Tamaki, Rotorua, Gisborne, Hastings, Palmerston North, Wellington Central, and St. Albans, the only. South Island seat to change. In Tamaki, the final result announced yesterday showed Mr R. D Muldoon (National) as having increased his election-night majority of 1079 over the sitting Labour member, Mr R. J. Tizard, to 1148. Two Ministers in the Labour Government, Mr C. F. Skinner (Buller) and Mr F. Hackett (Grey Lynn), increased their majorities in yesterday’s final returns. Mr Skinner, who is Deputy-Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture, increased his majority from 1402 to 1553, and Mr Hackett, v. :o is Minister of Labour, increased his from 4387 to 4596.
Figures supplied by the Pr-zs Association yesterday incorrectly showed the election-night majority of the Prime Minister (Mr Nash) as having been reduced in the final count. Instead, his majority increased, from 2282 on election night to a final figure of 2349, an increase of 67 votes. Three National Party members who were returned from Canterbury—Mr R. G. Gerard (Ashburton), Mr J. K. McAlpine (Selwyn), and Mr W. H. Gillespie (Hurunui)—all increased i ur majorities in yesterday’s returns, Mr Gerard from 2287 to 2558, Mr McAlpine from 2560 to 2839, and Mr Gillespie from 2498 to 2731.
