NATIVES WOUNDED BY SHELL
One Dies Before Mercy Flight Arrives
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 20.
A mercy flight by an R.N.Z.A.F. Sunderland to bring two seriously injured natives to Suva from Vatau. an island in the southern Lau group, ended in tragedy on Saturday, as one of the natives died before the aeroplane arrived. The two natives were injured when a six-inch shell exploded on the island yesterday and a request was made to the R.N.Z.A.F. to fly the two men to Suva.
The request came late on Friday night, and as there are no night landing facilities on the island the flying boat was not able to leave until dawn on Saturday. The native still alive was flown to Suva by 8.30 a.m. Fragments of the shell were also flown back to Suva and the date 1917 can be seen on some.
