The United States Vice-President-elect, Senator Lyndon Johnson, told a meeting of 200 N.A.T.O. Parliamentarians today that he believed “this will prove to be a year of landmark decision in America.”

“I would hope that together we can make this a decade ot landmark dedication and achievement throughout the free world.” he said. Senator Johnson said- the result of the Presidential election

r was “in no sense a repudiation f of President Eisenhower’s sup- - port for the instruments of mutual strength in Western Europe.” He continued: “A new genera- ' tion of Americans—who came to ’ early maturity fighting, for freedom on the fields of Europe and the islands of the Pacific—is coming to power in the leadership of our land. “In their hearts is determination to make the most vigorous use of America’s resources to assure their children, your children. and the children of all nations, a life without war—a future of peace.” Senator Johnson said the "voice of isolation is stilled in America. Each party—each section—speaks now with one voice for more effective American participation tn more meaningful joint endeavours among nations for universal peace, freedom and justice.” he said. “A decade ago we answered the threat of war with political courage. “Now this new decade of the 1960’s challenges Parliamentarians to show equal courage in dedicating this new capacity for strength and abundance to stamping out the eternal causes of war—human want, injustice and inequality, ignorance, illness and everything else.” Senator Johnson was addressing the annual meeting of the Parliamentarians. They were discussing the expansion of N.A.T.O.’s responsibilities and increasing North American-Euro-pean co-operation. The French President, General Charles de Gaulle, has made it clear that he considers extension of the treaty’s geographical area of responsibility and its strategic responsibilities to be of prime importance.
