2000-MILE TOW TO HOBART
Small Ship Sails With Ferry
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. 18.
The 166-ton freighter Sumatra left Auckland today on a 2000mile haul to Tasmania. The Sumatra, commanded by Captain R. Boulton, is making her second attempt to tow the 450-ton vehicular ferry Ewen W. Alison to Hobart. An initial attempt was called off last week when the Ewen W. Alison sprang a leak at sea and was brought back to Auckland for repairs. . In April another ferry, the Alex Alison, sank about 200 miles from Hobart while being towed from Auckland by the freighter Kaitoa.
The Tasmanian Government bought the two ferries from the North Shore Transport Company for £12,000 when the harbour bridge made them redundant. The Sumatra will make about five knots and will call at the New South Wales port of Eden for fresh food and water.
The trip to Hobart is expected to take 24 days.
