CHILD KILLED IN RHODESIA
N.Z. Missionary’s Daughter (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 18. In a letter to the Salvation Army headquarters, Wellington, Lieutenant H. Harford, a New Zealand missionary teaching at Mazoe secondary school, near Salisbury, Southern Rhodesia, tells of the murder, on November 9, of his 15-month-old daughter, Elizabeth. Lieutenant Harford, who left New Zealand three years ago with his wife and family, was formerly in business in Feilding. His wife comes from Petone. The letter says that because school examinations were being held, Lieutenant Harford left home for the school at 7.15 a.m. About 8.30 a.m. Mrs Harford put the child in her cot for her morning sleep, then went to the school, leaving the house in the care of an African housegirl. Both Lieutenant Harford and Mrs Harford returned to the house for morning tea about 9.30 a.m. Though it is believed the child was killed some time in that hour the tragedy was not discovered till later when Mrs Harford went to wake the baby. She found the baby smothered and her body bruised.
