Monowai Beats Kaiapoi

Playing its first season in the Canterbury Softball Association's senior women’s competition, the improving Kaiapoi team had Monowai struggling for runs until the fifth innings. Although Monowai won. 6-0, it scored in only two innings.

Monowai B had Christchurch in check until fielding lapses in the fifth innings enabled it to go into a good lead. Hagley was not extended to beat Teachers’ College. Results were:— Monowai A 6, Kaiapoi 0. Hagley 17, Teachers’ College 6. Christchurch 19, Monowai B 5. Monowai A v. Kaiapoi Monowai A. scoreless with runners on to the fourth, held Kaiapoi three up, three down in reply. Stronger batting by Monowai in the fifth enabled the side to score three runs and Kaiapoi was scoreless with two runners on. Monowai failed with one on in its 'next innings, and Kaiapoi was away with two runners on. In its last innings, strong battling by J. Satu, J. Scott and E. Law enabled Monowai to score three runs before two good catches by M. Hopkins dismissed the side. Kaiapoi, trailing by six runs, was held three-up, three-down. B. Makinson pitched well for Monowai and gave the Kaiapoi batters many anxious moments. She struck out five batters, gave up three hits and only four batters throughout the game managed to reach first. The Kaiapoi team played very well and is improving with every game. The fielding of the team is of a very high standard.

Hagley v. Teachers’ College Hagley’s first batter up, C. Mullally. opened well with a home run, and with hits by M. Gaskell and J. Timms and another by C. Mullally, the side scored seven runs. After Teachers’ College’s first two batters had been dismissed, B. Preddy hit well to the outfield and advanced on an error, which allowed K. Hands to first, arid both runners scored on a hard drive by L. Hay. In Hagley’s next innings, with one away, Joan Irving gained first on errors, stole to third and scored on a passed ball, which allowed M. Gaskell to third. She scored on a hit by J. Timms. Teachers’ College was three-up, three-down. C. Mullally and T. Tuhou scored for Hagley on a fielder’s choice and stole in the third. For Teachers’ College. J. Stratfotd, after being walked to first, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored the team’s only run on an error. Hagley went further ahead in the next innings when a fielder’s choice allowed Joan Irving to score after hitting on, and M. Gaskell crossed the home plate on a wild pitch. Teachers’ College was scoreless with one on. A passed ball gave Hagley its only

run in the fifth innings, and Teachers’ College failed to score. J. Timms stole home for Haglev's onlv run in the next innings, and Teachers’ College was held three-up, three-down.

In the last innings Hagley scored its only run on a fielder’s choice. In its last innings Teachers’ College, with good hits bv J. Stratford. K. Hands and L. Hay. was able to add three runs to its total. Christchurch v. Monowai B

Christchurch was held scoreless in its first innings, and Monowai B replied with C. Tennent scoring on a fielder’s choice. Errors allowed Christchurch to open its account in its next innings, and the side scored two runs. An error allowed L. Alston (Monowai) to first in reply, and with good base running she made third. She tied the score when she scored on an error. The side was held scoreless with bases loaded.

In Christchurch’s third innings H. Johnson hit a two-base hit and scored on fielder’s choices. She was followed home by L. Penney. Monowai was three-up, three-down in reply.

An overthrow allowed Christchurch its only run in the fourth innings, and in reply Monowai batters drove the ball hard, upsetting the fielders to score two runs and draw even once more. Monowai’s fielding lapsed in the fifth innings, and with four runs in on errors. H. Johnson, with two runners on base, added another three runs to the innings total with a long home run. The next batter was away and then a fine double play between L. Alston' and L. Utling ended the innings. In reply B. Hobbs hit in the only run for Monowai.

L. Parish (Christchurch) drove the ball hard for a home run with two on base in the next innings, and another run came in on an error. Monowai was scoreless with one on.

A two-base hit by J. Phillips for Christchurch seemed to unsettle Monowai. and three runs came on errors before the fielding tightened. Monowai failed with two on base in its last innings for Christchurch to win easily, 19-5, although hard pressed to the fourth innings.
