Record Horse, Sheep Entries At Courtenay

There were record horse and sheep entries in the Courtenay Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s eighty-fifth annual show at Kirwee on Saturday. Conditions were fine but marred slightly by a fairly strong wind.

Although the exact figures *were not available it is believed that a record was also established for the total of entries, which were more than 250 up on last year.

The grand parade was led by the president (Mr J. S. McLaughlin), the senior vice-president (Mr R. W. Mac Kay) and the junior vice-president (Mr J. R. Manson). The member of Parliament for Selwyn (Mr J. K. McAlpine) spoke after the grand parade. The Ellesmere Highland Pipe Band was in attendance.

During the luncheon adjournment there was a display of mobile farm machinery in the ring. There was a large attendance of spectators. Members of the Legion of Frontiersmen manned the gates and assisted with the parking of cars. A new concrete tie-up wall for cattle was constructed during the year. The new class for Dorset Downs was well supported and the Southdown classes drew exceptionally large entries. Entries in the main sections were as follows with the figures for last year in parenthesis: Sheep, 388 (2731; cattle, 149 (173); horses. 899 (875); poultry, 65 (73); dogs, 57 (67); grain and seeds, 32 (30); farm produce. 217 (180); home industries, 139 (109); photography, 98 (40); schools, 541 (537); shearing, 23 (31). Dorset Classes

The Dorset Down classes were well supported but the Dorset Horn classes lacked competition as there were only two entries, said the judge. Mr G. H. Burrows, of Geraldine. The champion Dorset Down ram of W. H. and K. J. Oliver was showing its age but was a good specimen of the breed and was fine in the wool. The reserve champion of W. H. and K. J. Oliver had a good carcase but was a little weak in the lower jaw. J. BoydClark’s champion ewe was an excellent animal and the same exhibitor also won the reserve championship for ewes with a shorn animal which showed some verv good points. Entries in the flock sheep classes were in a good condition but the numbers exhibited were not large and he would have liked to have seen more competition, said the judge, Mr T. H Paterson, of Rangiora. Sheep entered in the Border Leicester classes were of a fair quality but some of the exhibits had gone back a little since they were prepared for the Christchurch show, said the judge, Mr H. M. Copland, of Dromore. Although entries were not large in the classes for Romneys the first sheep in each class were of a good standard, said the judge. Mr G. S. Marshall, of Ashburton. The chamoion ram of A. L. and D. J. Adams was a good, bold animal with a very sound fleece. A. L. and D. J. Adams also won the ewe championship with a sheep which displayed good breed type. The ewe hogget under 18 months class was particularly strong and very little senarated the prize winners. This was the best class in the section. The standard of entries in the Corriedale section was good, said the judge, Mr F. K. Forrester R. B. Pawsey had considerable success in this section. His champion ram was an outstanding woolly hogget and he also took a reserve championship with a ewe hogget. D. H. Penney’s champion ewe was a good quality Corriedale and carried a fine fleece of wool for her age. Few Entries The number of entries in the fat sheep classes was low but the quality of the exhibits was high, said the judge, Mr W. J. Heenan, of Ashburton. There were large entries in the fat lamb classes and the animals were in very good condition. Lambs entered in the export classes were too fat in most cases. The sheep in the South Suffolk classes were of good quality for a country show, said the judge, Mr G. D. Neave. The milking Shorthorn classes were small but the cattle were brought out well and it was a pity there were not more entries, said the judge, Mr T. R. Saunders. of Sefton. Entries in the Jersey classes were good, said the judge, Mr W J. Russell, of Leithfield. The champion Jersey cow was the most outstanding animal. Competition was lacking but the standard of entries in the Friesian classes was good, said the judge, Mr R. Hundson, of Springston. The standard of entries In the classes for led horses was very high and most of the entries could take their places in any metropolitan show, said the judge, Mr D. B. C. Allin, of Kaiapoi. The winner of the class for brood mares of 13 to 14.2 hands was an outstanding horse. Standard Good Numerically the classes were not very strong, said the judge of harness horses and ponies and saddle cobs. Mr R. L. Bennetts, of Christchurch. However, the standard of entries was fairly good, especially in the harness classes. The winners in the harness classes were probably among the best in New Zealand. The standard of the small ponies was excellent and was second only to the Christchurch show, said the judge of the ponies up to 13 hands, Mrs A. G. Montgomery. of Christchurch. There was very little between the champion and reserve champion The riding in the class for children up to 13 years was generally good The prize-winning pony jumps performed reasonably well. In the open classes the jumps could be made a little more difficult. . The ponies were of a very high standard and the champion and reserve champion would hold their own. anywhere in New Zealand. said the judge of saddle ponies, riding classes and pony jumps, Mr M. H. Williams, of Belfast. There were same excellent performances in the riding classes and jumps. There was an improvement in the standard of shearing on last year, said the judge, Mr W Johnston, of Rangiora . The quality of work was very high and

there was a good entry. In the senior section J. Small was first with 83 points, R. Redmond second with 81J points and R. Pirika was third with 80| points. The junior section was won by D. Heslop with 90 points, B Gliddon was second with 80 points and J. O’Neara was third with 70J points. There were 43 entries in the sheep dog trial and A. E. Benbow’s Boy was first with 98| points. A. E. Benbow’s Ken and R. M. Wilson’s Trump were equal second with 98 points. Championship Awards Championships were awarded as follows: Sheep.—Border Leicester —Ram: P. G. Morrison (reserve, D.
