MALVERN BEAT HURUNUI
Malvern beat Hurunui by 197 runs on the first Innings in a representative cricket match between the two sub-associations Saturday. This was Hurunui’s first representative match since it affiliated with the , Canterbury Cricket Association this season. _ , A first-wicket partnership of 108 between N. Q. Wright and R. Gunn gave Malvern a fine start in its first innings, and the tail-enders batted consistently to bring the total to 263. The Hurunui fielding was very good. The best bowler was J. Gardner, medium-fast. and .he was well supported by the mediumpaced B. Davison. At no stage did the Hurunui batting gain the initiative, although T. McGowan played forcefully to score 58 not out in his team’s second innings. The left-hand mediumpaced bowler, R. Irvine. was outstanding with five wickets for 20. and he was well supported by D. Gunn (four wickets for 10). In the second innings R. Gunn took three , cheap wickets. The Malvern fielding was a feature of the match, and no catches were dropped in either of Huru- [ nui’s innings.
