Matchless In Lead

At the completion of the third round of. the Suburban Cricket I T s “°£ ,a , t J on .’S competitions Matchless holds the lead in the senior A grade. Matchless failed only by the narrowest of margins to gain an outright win over Aranui on Saturday. Aranui was dismissed for 125 in its first innings. Bowling for Matchless P. Sheahan took four for 20, including a hat-trick. Forced to follow on Aranui looked to be in trouble, only E. Courtier of the earlier batsmen being in form. The tail-ehders showed up in a better light and enabled Aranui to hold out, D. Stapley (38) being the best batsman. Beckenham went very close to an outright loss to Waltham, which declared its innings closed at 2.30 p.m., for 272 for eight. This left Beckenham 158 in arrears. The team’s last wicket fell just before stumps with the total at 163. J. Moorhead, taking seven for 51, was the mainstay of the Waltham attack. New Brighton was not hard pressed to obtain the only outright win, with R. Hill, I. Steere, and A. Smith sharing the wickets in both of Sumner’s innings.
