TEAMS’ RACE
Win For P. Mander’s Trio Using every trick and device in the book, a Christchurch Yacht Club trio of R-class craft won the teams’ race at the Waimakariri Sailing Club’s regatta at Kairaki yesterday. On some occasions the boats jostled each other s<y close to the shelf of the river that they scraped varnish. It was a battle of tactics, and the winning team was Salaam <P. Mander). Freeway (C. Papps), and Sari (F. Simpson). The first of the teams' races eliminated one of the two Christchurch chib teams which had been drawn against each other.
Mander’s A team combined well to beat Frenby (G. Mander). Pirouette (H. England), and Wizard (H. Hobden) by 13J points to 8. The Waimakariri team (G. Wilson’s Tempest. G. Cooke’s Gazelle and I. Donaldson’s Revel) had onlv a slightly less satisfactory win over the Canterbury entry (B. Treleaven in Fresco. G. Good in Result, and B. Wall in Impetuous). In the sail-off it looked as if Waimakariri might w-in, but the Christchurch A team was too good. The wily Papps was let through to the front and kept his place, and each time Gazelle tried to challenge Mander had Salaam there to stop him. Around the leeward mark for the last time Cooke found a hole and slipped inside Mander. who was caught napping, and came in for a well-merited second place. Tempest was fourth and Sari fifth.
The final result was: Christchurch A. 12J points, 1; Waimakariri, 9 points, 2.
