MINOR FIRES
Dry grass in a shelter at the Opawa Railway Station caught fire shortly before 11 a.m. on Saturday and the blaze caused a considerable amount of smoke. Units from the Central and Woolston brigades extinguished the outbreak. A chimney fire at the home of Mr F. Bell, 9 Albemarle street, about 2.30 p.m. was attended by a unit of the Sydenham brigade.
About half an acre of scrub near the corner of Clifton terrace and Panorama road was burnt by a fire which got out of control during burning off by a contractor. Units of the Central. Woolston, and Sumner brigades answered a call shortly before 1 p.m. . A fire in a macrocarpa hedge at the home of Mr J. Aldridge, 735 Main South road, was extinguished by the brigade on Saturday afternoon. A short time later a call was received to a scrub fire in Rockinghorse road. New Brighton. Two units of the New Brighton brigade attended a grass fire on the river bank in New Brighton at 9.29 a.m. yesterday. A grass and scrub fire in Aidershot street Wainoni, was extinguished by units from the Central and Woolston brigades at 11.8 am. At 1.44 pm. units from the Central and Sydenham brigades went to a grass fire in Edinburgh street. A hedge fire in Harewood road was attended by a St Albans brigade unit at 4.15 pm.
