ZONING NEAR AIRPORT
Value Of Vacant Land Shown The wisdom of keeping houses away from the boundaries of Chnstdhurch Airport was borne out by the recent Canberra jet bomber crash at the airport, according to the airport manager (Mr I. A. R. Jamieson). “The Canberra landed on bare land; but had the land been zoned as residential it is conceivable that the plan would have ended up at some person’s back door. No-one wants these crashes to happen but it is comforting to know that the area is free of houses when they do occur,” said Mr Jamieson. “The original zoning plan, which we hope .to maintain, gives the public protection. ‘‘One of the difficulties of such Boning is that in a Court of Appeal tangible evidence to prove the value of vacant land near an airport can never be found. This crash gave us the opportunity of making a statement of this kindand showed the importance of our decision,” said Mr Jamieson.
