Manslaughter Verdict

(New Zealand Press Association) WANGANUI. November 20. After a retirement of just under four hours, a jury in the Supreme Court at Wanganui on Saturday found an 18-year-old Indian, Balbir Singh, not guilty of murder, but guilty of manslaughter. The Chief Justice (Sir Harold Barrowclough) remanded accused until next Friday for sentence. Members of the jury were excused from further service for three years. Accused was charged with the murder of Ras Singh, aged 29 years, at Otiwhiti station, near Hunterville, on the afternoon of September 11. 1960. The hearing began on Tuesday, and on Friday, when the Court rose, the hearing of evidence had been completed and counsel had addressed the jury. On Saturday morning his Honour summed up, his address taking 94 minutes. At the hearing, the Crown prosecutor (Mr N. R Bain) was assisted by Mr F. J. Connell. Accused was represented by Mr R Stacey (Wellington), with him Mr C. Bayliss (Masterton).
