Light Mood Surprises

Euchre, O’Dearo, Florita, Kerry Queen, Alight and Eden Derby gave ground at the start of the Hayward Handicap. Peebles, Kingsdonw Patch and Mystic Star were the early leaders, but Mystic Star eased back and tangled before the end of two furlongs.

Pencarne was sent to the lead at the mile and a quarter, with Light Mood in about eleventh position. Light Mood sprinted round the field after passing the half-mile and he was in front two furlongs out. He raced to the straight with a lead of two lengths over Pencame, with John Leslie, Peebles, Lavengro and Kingsdown Patch handy.

Light Mood looked in for an easy win at the half-furlong, but Kingsdown Patch, which ran in several times in the straight, finished fast and ran him to half a length. Peebles had every chance * and was a short length back third, well clear of Florita, which made up ground. Mystic Star was fifth, ahead of John Leslie, Euchre, Pencarne and Stylish George.
