TROTTING FALSE STEP WINS AGAIN

Matson Handicap Field Beaten

False Step won his third race within 11 days and advanced his earnings for the period to £7005 when he led over the last mile and gained the easiest of wins in the Allan Matson Handicap at Addington on Saturday. Any chance of success for a front-marker ended at the end of two furlongs when J. D. Litten slowed the field down to a crawl with Harlequin Parade. When there was no sign of any increase in the pace at the end of three furlongs, C. C. Devine sent False Step after the leaders. Although forced very wide on the track, he sped to the front with one mile left and from then on none of the others was capable of putting False Step to the test. He won unchallenged by three and a half lengths from Lookaway, with Sun Chief making ground for third after having trouble working clear at the straight entrance.

False Step really showed his class when he took the lead. He was timed over his last mile and a half in 3min 4 4-ssec, his opening half-mile in Imin 3 l-ssec, six furlongs in Imin 35 3-ssec, mile in 2min 6 l-ssec, and 10 furlongs in 2min 34 3-ssec. His sprint from the half-mile to the quarter post in 28 2-ssec ended any chance of even one of his rivals working into a challenging position. False Step’s official time for the distance was 3m in 22 4-ssec, 1 l-ssec outside the record established by Ribands and equalled in the Allan Matson Handicap 12 months ago by Caduceus. His time was an outstanding effort considering the srong, cool easterly wind the horses had to contend with in the front straight. The second leg of the double, the Hayward Handicap, resulted in a good win for the Invercargillowned and trained Light Mood, which held off the faster-finishing Kingsdown Patch by half a lengh. Light Mood is a stablemate of Lookaway. He has plenty of ability, but is not always reliable at the start There was merit in his win and he should not be hard to place to advantage. The False Step—Light Mood doubles combination paid £163 4s 6d for £l. The meeting was held in fine but cool weather before a satis-

The track was ie in good order. id The racing was again of a high n- standard, but there were several ix instances of interference. in in False Step’s Win to Invicta, Dundee, Auditor and K Lady Belmer gave ground at the start of the Allan Matson Handicap. False Step made a splendid beginning and was on terms with Lookaway just after the sXrt. ie Harlequin Parade and Lady !C ’ Shona began best, but after a fast ?• first A furlong the pace dropped away until the leaders appeared u to be doing little better than a Ie jog. C. C. Devine waited until the end of three furlongs to send J False Step round the field. Some a of the others attempted to go with him, but although he was forced e, three and then four and more d wide he was too speedy for them 1- and he was soon closer to the i, fence. g Highland Heath was in front at a the end of three and a half furlongs, and a half a furlong later >f Auditor took over. False Step xf strode clear at the mile post and e continued on at a solid pace. He n sped away at better than twod minute speed at the half-mile, with Lookaway setting out after d him at the three furlongs after Is tangling slightly. False Step raced for home by e two lengths from Lookaway, with »- two lengths to Auditor and High-
