ATTACKED BY HOODLUMS
Youths Injured At Baths
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. 20.
A young man is in Auckland Hospital with concussion and a youth has a broken nose as the result of being assaulted by a gang ot hooligans in the men’s dressing rooms at the Parnell baths this afternoon. Eleven suspects, one of whom was only 14 years of age, were apprehended by the police in St. Stephens avenue, Parnell, a few minutes after the incident and taken to the Central police station for questioning.
The injured man in hospital is Allan McCullum, aged 21, single, a clerk, of Morningside. The injured youth is Ralph Edward Pitcher, aged 17, an electrician, of Mount Eden. He was treated at the casualty department and sent home.
Most of the 2000 people at the baths knew nothing of the assault until several police patrol cars arrived in answer to a telephone call.
The assault was discovered by an attendant who entered the dressing room to And the two bathers and the concrete floor spattered with blood. All attendants were immediately called on the loud speaker but the gang had then left by a back gate. After being questioned, the 11 suspects were allowed to go home. It is understood charges are pending.
