SITUATION IN CANTERBURY

Normal Services Today

Railways Road Service drivers would be instructed not to travel over other than normal routes and the other members of the Amalgamated Society of Rail Servants would not undertake work usually done by the Enginedrivers’, Firemen’s and Cleaners’ Association, said Mr D. M. Kane. Dominion president of the A.S.R.S., last evening. Mr Kane said his society was not involved in the dispute and had not received any official notification of it but as the Road Services staff could become involved it was certain members of the A.S.R.S. would not take over any duties of the locomotive branch.

The secretary of the Christchurch branch of the Enginedrivers’, Firemen’s and Cleaners’ Association (Mr R. G. Quinney) said last evening that there would be no stoppage in Christchurch today but that did not mean there was not a possibility of the dispute spreading to Christchurch.

“There have been no discussions here and there have been no rumours of a strike,” said the president of the Timaru branch of the E.F.CA. “We wiß go the constitutional way,” Mr S. G. Crowe, secretary of the Greymouth branch of the Engine-drivers’, Firemen’s and Cleaners’ Association, said last night. “Our resolutions have been referred to the Dominion executive,” said Mr Crowe, but he declined to reveal their contents.
