HOUSE GUTTED AT SHEFFIELD
Family Away
Voluntary firemen in cricket attire fought a severe fire which gutted a one-storey wooden house in Sheffield yesterday afternoon. At the time of the fire—between 3.30 p.m. and 4 p.m.—the occupants of the house were out.
The house, which was opposite the public hall, was described as being a write-off by a bystander. Nothing much was saved and what was was badly charred. For the last few weeks carpenters had been working at the house doing alterations and adding a new kitchen.
Members of the Sheffield Volunteer Fire Brigade were playing cricket on the nearby domain when the alarm, believed to have been given by some boys, was heard. They rushed to begin fighting the fire. Other assistance was given by members of the Darfield and Springfield volunteer fire brigades. At the time of the fire Mr I. Harrison, the occupant, was visiting his wife in the maternity hospital at Darfield, where his fourth child was born earlier in the week. The other three children are thought to be staying with Mr Harrison’s sister at Hororata.
