ELECTIONS IN U.S., ITALY
Observations By City Man
Mr F. G. Hill. Christchurch manager of Tasman Empire Airways, Ltd., has returned home in time to cast his vote in the General Election next week after being a bystander at two other election campaigns in the last few weeks.
In a round-the-world air trip. Mr Hill was in the United States for the Presidential election. He followed the results on television, and said it gave a fascinating coverage of the progress. The result remained in doubt until 2 a m. on the day after the election, and even then was by no means certain.
While he was in Rome. Italy was having elections, and Mr Hill met a medical student who produced his Fascist Party membership card. It contained a photograph of Mussolini, which the student took out and kissed. In Germany. Mr Hill had another view of politics. A ' bartender told him the current joke: “The optimist is learning Russian and the pessimist is learning Chinese.”
