ATLAS MISSILE EXPLODES
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) VANDENBERG BASE (California), October 13. An Atlas intercontinental ballistic missile was destroyed last night Imin after It had been launched, Air Force officials announced today. The missile developed a malfunction and destroyed itself in a shower of fireworks. It was the eighth training launching of an Atlas missile from this base. The explosion could be seen at Santa Maria, 18 miles away. No-one was injured and no property was damaged. An Air Force spokesman told reporters that the missile had been destroyed by some defect within its own mechanism.
