SCOUTS BUILD CANOE
Launching Ceremony Today A 15ft two-man canoe built by six members of the Shirley senior scout troop will be launched on the Avon, near the old rowing club’s sheds in Fitzgerald avenue today at 10 a.m. The scouts began work on their project in June and worked each Saturday morning. Funds to build the canoe have been raised from the sale of bottles and firewood, together with the assistance of donations of timber and metal from parents and friends. The canoe is made of canvas over a frame of wood and ply and is varnished inside. The outside is painted white on the hull and air-sea-rescue orange on the deck. At the stem is an orange pennant with the name “Alley Oop” embroidered on white, and also made by one of the scouts.
