PRISON RIOT IN BOGOTA
13 Convicts Die In Battle
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) BOGOTA (Colombia). Sept. 29 Troops and police were called out late yesterday to block an attempt by 1800 dagger-wielding convicts to . seize control of Bogota's La Picota Thirteen convicts were killed and 2 2persons were wounded in a brief but bitter battle at the prison. Several of those wounded were guards, two of whom were repotted to be in serious condition.
The convicts apparently planned to seize the prison and fortify it to withstand a siege. The outbreak began with a fight in the prison yard among convicts who had been engaged in what appears to have been a staged political altercation. When guards went into the yard to break up the fight, the prisoners turned on them.
A Justice Ministry spokesman said the outbreak appeared to have been carefully planned in advance. He said the ministry had been unable so far to find out where the convicts obtained the knives with which they were armed.
