PROTECTION OF STATUS
Presentations To Olympic Runners (New Zealand Press Association! AUCKLAND, Sept. 20. Care will be taken that the amateur status of the Olympic medallists. M. G. Heiberg. P. G Snell and B. A. Magee, will not be jeopardised by receiving a fireside chair each at a special Auckland City Council function on Tuesday. Mr JL M. Dickie, president of the Auckland Amateur Sports Association, make ' further inquiries curing the week-end to ensure the preservation of their amateur status. Halberg rang me this afternoon about it," said! Mr Dickie tonight “He was worried, and although I think it will be all right I shall- take further steps to protect -the boys. “I have warned them not to have their photographs . taken with the chairs.” The chairs, made with legs shaped like the legs of an athlete running, were built by Mr G. E. Emms, of Gisborne, who manufactured the Everest chair presented to Sir Edmund Hillary. Mr J. F. McManeqiin, the Olympic team athletics section manager in Rome, said tonight that the rule concerning amateur status referred to any sportsman who knowingly permitted his name or photograph to be used for advertising purposes.
