GRASS SEED IN DEMAND

Failure Of Crops Overseas

(New Zealand Press Association) PALMERSTON N., Sept. 4.

A representative of a large seed company in Palmerston North said that New Zealand would be exporting far more grass seed this season.

“Because the main grass-pro-ducing countries had had weather which has practically ruined all crops, New Zealand is being swamped with orders from England and the Continent,” he said. “New Zealand, which normally exports £1.5 million worth of seeds, will have exports worth £2.5 million this year.” Poland, a large clover-producing country, suffered severe floods. The usual heavy crop was lost. It was possible some New Zealand clover seed would be imported by Poland this season.

Ireland’s ryegrass crop was particularly poor. Consequently, New Zealand was exporting perennial and short rotation ryegrass to Ireland, as well as England.
